The Justice Department has assigned a federal hate crimes lawyer to help prosecute a man charged with murdering a transgender student in Iowa.
Kashmire Redd, a trans man of color, was found dead in New York state early Monday. Police said Redd was fatally stabbed by his partner, who is charged with second-degree murder.
Pedro Redding was charged with murder, conspiracy and weapons charges in the killing of a transgender woman in Philadelphia, but police stopped short of calling it a hate crime.
